You May Soon Earn Less Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan Miles on Qantas in Economy Class - from 01 January 2020

Alaska Airlines is not part of any airline alliance but it does have a number of partner airlines which makes it relevant enough for this part of the world. Qantas is one of the partner airlines and this means that you will be able to accrue Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan miles when you are flying on Qantas with an eligible revenue ticket. Previously, all eligible fare classes in Economy Class (including discount economy) accrue 100% base miles but starting from 01 January 2020, your Economy Class flight may accrue only 25%, 50% or 100% of the base miles depending on the fare class.

If you are crediting your Qantas flights into the Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan program, the number of Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan milesthat you will accrue may change if you are traveling in Economy Class (fortunately, there are no changes to the accrual rates in Business and First Class at the time of writing):

  • Economy (H, B, Y) - 100%

  • Economy (G, K, L, M, S, V) - 50%

  • Discount Economy (N, O, Q) - 25%

While we have seen a number of unfavourable changes to the Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan program in recent months, it is still a fantastic frequent flyer program even for members residing in this part of the world with no intention of flying Alaska Airlines. Despite being in Singapore, I have managed to obtain MVP Gold status (after hitting 50,000 elite-qualifying miles) for 2019 but I will only be keeping an MVP Gold status for 2020 - this still gives me a generous 50% bonus on base miles when traveling on partner airlines. In fact, if you tend to fly on Singapore Airlines in First or Business Class (revenue ticket only), you will be able to accrue PPS Value while accruing Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan miles - this is essentially a double-dip!

If you are low on Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan miles, you have until the end of 23 December 2019 (11:59 PM PST) to enjoy a 50% bonus on purchased miles (this is the most ever offered so it is highly unlikely that a better offer will surface). For those of you in Singapore, you have until 3:59 PM on 24 December 2019 to purchase Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan miles with a 50% bonus,
